Drawing is a picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen or crayon rather than paint or the art or activity of making drawing. Drawing is one of the oldest forms of human expression, with evidence for its existence preceding that of written communication. Drawing is used to express one's creativity, and therefore has been prominent in the world of art. In Western terminology, drawing is distinct from painting, even though similar media are often employed in both tasks.
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, colour or other medium to a solid surface. The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges and airbrushes can be used. Painting is a mode of creative expression and the forms are numerous. Paintings can be naturalistic or representational (as in still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract or symbolic.
